NHTI
NHTI (Capital Area Race Series race #2) – My knee had been bothering me since the marathon (less than 2 weeks ago) and I was not feeling great after doing a little “test” workout on Tuesday. I don’t like racing at night and had this not been part of the CARS I would have just skipped it. I’m enjoying training and don’t need any setbacks. It was windy and warm when I got to NHTI at 5 pm. I quickly got my number and headed out for a warm-up on the course. The 15-25 mph breeze was going to be a pain. It was in the 60s so not hot and there was complete cloud cover, so really it wasn’t a terrible night to race. My warm-up was slow which wasn’t encouraging but I was getting mentally in the game and felt ready to give it a go. I figured based on how I felt today and earlier this week that I could manage 6:40 pace or about 20:50. I really hoped to run closer to 6:30 pace (20:20).
They got nearly 300 signed up which is by far the biggest field since COVID. No one seemed to want to get on the starting line but eventually moved up. I got over on the left knowing that it was safer with the 90 degree turn 50 meters into the race. I got out safely and had a stream of people pass me in the first ¼ mile. It felt fast to me. There was a very screechy loud lady right on me who was yammering with Ryan Kelly about him pushing a baby carriage. I tried to ignore the distraction and stay out of trouble getting tangled up. When my watch didn’t beep at ½ mile I thought maybe I’d misjudged the distance, after a bit I looked at my watch and I’d hit the button twice at the start which just stopped my watch. I clicked it again so I’d at least get an idea of my pace if not my mile splits. I was a little surprised to see a 3:08 for the half but chalked that up to some assistance from a tailwind. I’d moved up from 20th to 15th by the end of the first loop (1.55 miles). Soon after I caught another guy and the chattering gal had stopped talking and was tucked in behind me to stay out of the breeze. I got safely past Ryan and caught one more guy around the 2 mile mark that got me into 10th place. I could not ditch the gal and she went into a kick with 400 to go that I could not match. I was happily surprised to clock a 19:56 which exceeded my goal for the day. I still have a long way to go if I want to break 19 this year!
