Looking back - 2020

5 years ago (May 2020) – At this time we were still mired in the pandemic and I continued to telework through the month of May.  My last 8 weeks (counting back from the end of May) mileage were 90, 92, 95, 94, 93, 92, 92, and 88.

I kept my streak of workouts going with a mid-week 5k on the “Fast n’ Flat 5k” on the Windham rail trail.  I was happy with a 18:13.7.  I only raced faster twice in 2019 so I’d say my training is headed in the right direction.  I headed up north for a nice group run with the Granite State Racing Team.  I must be an optimist; I can find some scenic sights anywhere.

I got in another workout on the 13th, this time a short one.  Goal was to break 5:30 for the mile.  My best time this year was a 5:36 back in March on the treadmill.  I think it is harder to go fast outside and especially hard to gauge effort with no markers.  I used a section of the Windham Rail Trail for this workout and had a pretty nice day with temps around 50 but a gusty wind (that fortunately was mostly a cross or tail wind). I ended up with a 5:31.8, not quite what I wanted but my fastest mile this year.
