October 2019 - 5 years ago:
I started back running again after missing 5 weeks. I spent a lot of time on the bike amassing up to 400 miles in a week of riding. I got a lot of reading done! The first weekend in October seemed like the perfect time to give running a chance again. Prior to meeting up with Petey & D-la I made a slight detour to catch sunrise on Robbin Hill. On this day I was able to see fog banks in the valleys and the sun glinting off of the Hancock building in Boston 22 miles away. The skyline of Boston seemed very close on this clear morning.
Mid-October found me back at Notchview reservation completing another 7+ miles of trail. I took full advantage of the aptly named “Orchard” trail and scored a bunch of apples for breakfast. After my run I passed through the DAR state forest for a visit to the Goshen Fire Tower. I hadn’t been to that one in more than 10 years.
My third shot to try and do something about the pain in my back was a medial branch block. The injection consists of a small amount of long acting local anesthetic. Unfortunately, the shot did not make a difference. The doc said “if it doesn’t work, we’ll have to start from scratch. I saw the orthopedist on 10/24 and the result was a definite fractured sacrum, the MRI was pretty clear. That meant no running for the next 8-12 weeks. No credit for my down-time of about 5 weeks off. The only good I took from it is that I could bike, hike, row, elliptical, basically anything but run. If things go really well, I might be able to start back before the end of the year.
Note how white the left side is, it should be the same as the right.
